Burung Burung Manyar
In Quarter1, we asked by our Bahasa Indonesian teacher, Elisabeth Pristiwi, called as Bu Tiwi, to read an Indonesian novel named Burung Burung Manyar. Burung Burung Manyar means Weaverbirds in English. This book was written by Y.B Mangunwijaya (1929 - 1999), which was a famous Catholic priest from Yogyakarta. We were asked to read it according to the page that our teacher asked us to read. After that, she gave us quiz to test us whether we read the book or not. This book took time before Indonesian Independence and after it. This book tells us about a man named Teto, he is half Nederland and half Indonesian. He wanted to help Indonesia to be a good country. Instead of being an Indonesian soldier, he joined NICA, the Nederland troop. He thought that Indonesia is better under the Nederland government control. On the other hand, he fell in love with an smart Indonesian girl named Atik. But, Atik was on the other side, the Indonesian side. She became the secretary for Indonesian government. That's why Teto was afraid to confess his love to Atik. Many years passed, the war was over and Indonesia has proclaimed their independence. Teto was still single and Atik already had a husband and 3 children. But, Teto felt that he was fail to take Atik as his husband. He thought that human is not like the weaver birds. When male weaver birds failed to catch a female weaver bird, it will destroy its nest and build the new one to catch the other female bird. That's why Teto didn't try to take Atik from her husband. At last, after Atik and her husband died in an air crash on the way to Mecca, their children were given to Teto for adoption because Atik trusted in Teto as a big brother. In this quarter, we had 2 tests. Both of them were analyzing questions. After we finished all the thing about this book, we were asked to choose our favorite quote from this book and fill the reflection sheet about this book. From this quarter, i learnt how to answer the analyzing question and i learnt a lot about Indonesian history. I did well on discussing
